Achieving 1.5 degrees is possible

Halitesh Datt, Fiji TV, Doha, Qatar
Achieving global warming goal of 1.5 degrees is feasible.

The current global warming goal stands at 2 degrees, however climate scientists at the United Nations Conference of Parties in Doha say it is possible to reach 1 point five degree goal.

To achieve that, all nations MUST start working towards it now.

Halitesh Datt spoke to Professor Bill Hare, Director and Senior Scientist of Climate Analytics,  in Doha and filed this report.

The two degree warming goal was adapted by the world leaders in Copenhagen three years ago

Even at that time, there was a strong objection by the small island states against this goal.

The Alliance of Small Island States and the Pacific have been calling for 1 point five degrees

Climate scientists say that achieving this within next century is possible.

With current emission pledges, we are heading towards warming of well over 3 degrees or even 4 degrees by 2100.

Scientists are asking the developed nations to act now and reduce their carbon emissions.

However the onus is also on smaller island states to take their own actions rather than waiting for a response from carbon emitting nations.

In doing so, the Pacific is undertaking a regional project called the Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement (PIGGAREP) which will see the region collectively reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent.

Whether world leaders will agree to an agreement that leads to a one point five degree goal or not, it will only be decided at the end of the meeting next week.
